Karen Myers Barker
/Karen’s nature photography captures the quiet beauty of Lummi Island and the Pacific Northwest.
She moved to Lummi in 1974 and fell in love with the slow island pace and local fishing culture of reefnetting. She soon ran her own all women’s crew, “Willey’s Angels,” and met her husband, Dave. They fished together for 25 years and their two children grew up on the gears.
You can find Karen’s work at Flicker. Her original video, For the Love of Reefnetting, featuring Karen’s photography, set to local island musician Bryan Thurber’s original score, is for sale at The Islander Store and Gude Erth Crafts.
Find Karen and other islanders giving oral histories of reefnetting at Washington Rural Heritage.
